Pro Tips for the Best Spooky Matcha
- Use thick yoghurt such as Greek style so it clings to the inside of the glass instead of sliding down.
- Draw the faces first on a dry, clean glass. Marker won’t stick to a wet or condensation-covered surface.
- Keep the marker on the outside of the glass only and away from the rim, and wipe it off when you’re done.
- Pour the matcha slowly over the back of a spoon so the green layer sits on top of the milk and the yoghurt stays in place.
- Use warm, not boiling, water when whisking your matcha. This keeps the flavour smooth and prevents bitterness.
FAQs
1. Can I make this dairy-free?
Yes! Use your favourite plant-based milk and a thick plant-based yoghurt such as coconut or soy.
2. Can I use something other than a whiteboard marker?
Yes. Washable glass or window markers work well, or you can skip the faces and simply use the yoghurt for the ghostly look.
3. Can I serve this hot instead of iced?
This recipe is designed for an iced glass so the yoghurt streaks hold their shape, but you can warm the milk for a cosy version. Expect the yoghurt to melt into the drink.
4. Can I sweeten this recipe?
Absolutely. Stir a little honey or maple syrup into the milk if you prefer a sweeter result.
