Pro Tips for the Best Ube Matcha

  • Use warm, not boiling, water when whisking your matcha, this keeps the flavour smooth and prevents bitterness.
  • Pour the matcha slowly over the back of a spoon to create a beautifully defined layered effect rather than mixing the two straight away.
  • Adjust sweetness to taste – ube powder already carries natural sweetness, so start light and add more if needed.
  • Stir before drinking to enjoy the full flavour of both matcha and ube together.

FAQs

1. What does ube taste like?

Ube is a purple yam popular in Filipino desserts, with a naturally sweet, creamy, vanilla-like flavour and a striking violet colour, a lovely contrast to matcha's earthy umami.

2. Can I make this dairy-free?

Yes! Use your favourite plant-based milk and cream alternative, coconut or oat-based options work particularly well with ube.

3. Can I serve this hot?

Absolutely. Simply warm your milk and skip the ice, preparing both the matcha and ube base with warm water as usual.

4. Where can I find ube powder?

We carry our own Maison Koko Premium Ube Powder, made specifically to deliver ube's authentic flavour and vibrant colour in drinks like this one.
